Iditarod Rules and Regulations

Required Supplies
Mushers are required to have the
following supplies:
an ax
sleeping bag weighing at least
5lbs
8 booties for each dog
1 pair of snowshoes
promotional materials from the
ITC
3 gallon pot
operational cooker
veterinarian notebook
Dogs
maximum number to start with~16
minimum number to start with~12
minimum number to end with~5
no dogs may be added
dogs must finish in the sled or
on the tow line
dogs are not aloud to run loose or
behind the sled
dogs must not be on any drugs
during the race
Mushers
mushers are aloud to help
troubled teams as long as it is reported
when a team comes within 50ft of
another, the musher in front must stop for 15 minutes and let the other pass
them
only one musher per team
mushers must only use
traditional forms of navigation
mushers must be 18 years old at
the start of the race
no substitutes are aloud unless
drivers permitted without permission from the race marshal

General Policies
entry fee: $ 1,750
food items weighing no more than
70lbs may be shipped to each checkpoint for the musher to pick up
the Iditarod comity reserves the
right to take urine samples anytime after the race has begun to an hour after
its finish for drug testing
